Michael John Horst

Mike Horst, 62, passed away on July 5, 2021, at Bellin Hospital following a long history of illness. He was born on December 18, 1958, to Agnes and Clarence “Pony” Horst. Mike attended and graduated from Phelps Public School in Phelps, Wisconsin. After graduating, he went to Wyoming with a several of his friends and his brother, where he found work driving truck for an oil company. After a few years, he returned to Land o’ Lakes Wisconsin and began working for Nagel’s Lumber Company. He became reacquainted with his childhood friend, Joni Cestkowski, and they later married in 1985. Together they had 2 girls, Sami and Kilie. In the late 80’s Mike moved to Aurora, Wisconsin and then eventually to Crystal Falls, Michigan. He began working for Inland Diesel in Iron Mountain, Michigan in 1987 until he was badly injured in a car accident in 1990. After his life altering accident, Mike worked on many woodworking projects, hunted and fished, and spent time with his family and friends. His most recent true joy was spending time with his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his wife, Joni; daughters, Sami (Walter) Dowling of Hancock, Michigan and Kilie (Bradley) Buschman of Pendleton, Kentucky; grandchildren, Abby and Luke Buschman; sister, Nancy (Arnie) Schauer and brother, Tom (Renee) Horst; brothers-in-law, Jim (Lisa) Cestkowski, Jeff (Cindy) Cestkowski, and Jerel (Neelone) Cestkowski; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Clarence Horst, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Iron County Hunters Safety Program. Checks may be made payable to the Iron County Hunters Safety Program. Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 16, 2021, at Guardian Angels Church in Crystal Falls, with Fr. Daniel Malone officiating. Burial will take place in Land O Lakes Cemetery, Land o Lakes, WI, with Deacon Terry Verville conducting burial rites. Memorials may be in his memory.
