Phyllis Joan Payne

Phyllis Joan “JoAnn” Payne, nee Bair, 90, of Crystal Falls, died Sunday, May 22, 2022, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility surrounded by her family. She was born January 17, 1932, in Boles Township, Franklin County, Missouri, daughter of the late Ervin and Sarah (Stearns) Bair. She graduated from New Baden High School in 1950. Jo married Edward “Timer” Payne on January 12, 1957, in Trenton, Illinois. They spent 52 wonderful years together prior to Timer’s passing in January 2009. Over the years, Jo worked at a number of nursing facilities, including the Clinton Manor Nursing Home in New Baden, Illinois and the Crystal Manor Nursing Home and the Iron County Medical Care Facility, both in Crystal Falls. Jo was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She never liked being in the limelight but would be found readily serving people behind the scenes. Family was Jo’s number one priority, helping to raise and nurture seven brothers and a sister, six children of her own, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called her Grandma PJ. She was truly loved and adored by her family. Jo is survived by her sons, Harold (Dawn) Payne of Crystal Falls, MI, Douglas (Susan) Payne of Mukwonago, WI, and Ronnie (Amy) Payne of Taylor, AR; her daughters, Cheryl (Zeke) Bouche of Iron Mountain, MI, Jo Lynn Perry of Crystal Falls, MI and Erin (Shannon) Reinke of Crystal Falls, MI; grandchildren, Erica, Kimberly (Brian), Monica (Robert), Bryant, Elaina, James, Grace, Lily, Caleb, Jessica, Jennifer, Kim, Cathi, Michael, Jeremy, Brian, and Julia (Michael); great-grandchildren, Emmett, Anja, Henry, Leo, Sophie, Mikie, Kyla, Carson, Adelaide, Anders, Nolan, Brody, and Joseph; her brothers, Duane (Linda) Bair, Ollie (Marie) Bair, Donnie (Pat) Bair, Larry (Charlotte) Bair; a sister, Bonnie Bair; sisters-in-law, Loretta, Rosalie, and Dorothy Bair, Joyce Zavada, and Lynne Reiser; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her twin brother and sister, John and Jacqlyn; brothers, Harold Bair, Michael Bair, and Gary Bair; a son-in law, Tom Perry; a grandson, Austin Reinke; her in-laws, Clyde and Myrtle Payne; brothers-in-law, Clyde and Marvin Payne, Robert Zavada, Jack Forsman, Eddie Heikkinen, and Eugene James; and sisters-in-law, Betty and Suellen Bair, Janet James, Nancy Payne, Edna Heikkinen, and Emma Jean Forsman. Jo’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Iron County Medical Care Facility for the wonderful care, love, and kindness shown to their mother during her stay. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022, from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Nash Funeral Home in Crystal Falls and on Saturday, June 4, 2022, from 9:00 am - 10:00 am at Christ United Methodist Church of Crystal Falls with a funeral service to follow at 10:00 am at the church. Pastor Vicky Pruitt will officiate. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to a charity or organization of your choosing.
