George Allan Holkup

Mr. George Allan Holkup, 93, of Crystal Falls, passed away on August 30, 2021, at the Iron County Medical Facility with his family by his side. George was born in Crystal Falls on June 3, 1928, to Joseph and Magdulene (Dufec) Holkup. He went to local schools and graduated from Crystal Falls High School in 1946. He proudly served our country in the WWII and Korean conflicts and was honorably discharged from the Army. He earned his degrees in education from Michigan State and moved to the Detroit/Trenton, MI, area where he taught science to high school students, most recently at Southgate Anderson High School in Southgate, MI. George never married and enjoyed traveling abroad and service with the Kiwanis Club in Trenton, MI, where he was Kiwanian of the year, was a member of the American Legion (Post 0087) and was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed taking his therapy dogs to schools and nursing homes. George was a lifelong Catholic and a parishioner at Guardian Angels Church at the time of his passing. George is survived by his nieces, Susan Eckola Shimkowitz (Elliot) of Crystal Falls and Kathy Holkup Kendrek (Walter) of Middletown, CT; his cousins, Bob Holkup and Jim Holkup; great-nephews, Derik Read, Chris Eckola, and Steve O’Brien; great-niece, Kim Hebb; his special friend, Jim Anderson of Trenton, MI; and cocker spaniel, Maggie. George is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Marion Holkup, Marjorie Eckola and Francis Holkup; his nephew, David Eckola; and many loyal cocker spaniels. Visitation will be private. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Guardian Angels Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 7 at 11 am. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in George’s memory can be made to the donor’s charity of choice. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Iron County Medical Care Facility.
