Louis D. Franz, 61, formerly of Alpha, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. Louis was born Feb. 17, 1951, in Oklahoma City, Okla., son of the late Chester and Esther (Fiester) Franz. He graduated from the Michigan School for the Deaf in 1970 and lived in the Crystal Falls area for most of his life. Louis was a former Lions Club member and he was a softball umpire for many years. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and bowling. Louis is survived by a son, Dale Franz of Crystal Falls; a daughter, Lisa (Chum) Bruette of Channing; two brothers, Jackey Franz and Jimmy D. (Toni Ann) Franz, both of Crystal Falls; a sister, Kathy Salem of Alpha; a brother-in-law, Ron Harju of Thunder Bay, Canada; three grandchildren, Emily, Matthew and Christina Bruette, all of Channing; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Franz/Husar; a grandson, Cole Bruette; a sister, Vickie Harju; a nephew, Chester Anderson; and his stepfather, John Husar.
