Phyllis Kuivila

Phyllis A. Kuivila, 90, of Crystal Falls, passed away on June 4, 2012 at Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls. Phyllis was born August 27, 1921 in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Carl Oscar and Fannie (Palo) Long. She has been a lifelong resident of Crystal Falls and married Emil Kuivila on March 16, 1940. He preceded her in death on August 23, 1981. Phyllis worked as a clerk in the Red Owl store in Crystal Falls for many years. She was a member of United Lutheran Church, the Iron County Medical Care Facility Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Pine Circle Sewing Club. She enjoyed sewing, wood carving shore birds, painting, bird watching and rock collecting. Phyllis' gift was as a caregiver and she was never happier than when she taking care of someone. She was survived by her daughter Jean Kuivila of Crystal Falls; her brother, Jack Long of Black River Falls, WI; her sister Joyce Salmi of Crystal Falls; a sister in law, Elma Long of Traverse City,MI; an aunt Irene Groop of Crystal Falls, many nieces and a nephew. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Robert O. Long and sister in law, Frances Long. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 7th from 9-11:00am at United Lutheran Church of Crystal Falls. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am at the church. Rev. Micheal Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Paul Palo, Jerry Groop, Jerry Aho, Ken Bogdala, Bob Surface and Lyle Smithson.
