Shirley A. Cavasin

August 25, 1942 - November 24, 2021

Shirley was born August 25th 1942, in Stambaugh, MI to Eino and Myrtle Maki of Beechwood, MI. She is a graduate of Iron River High School. She was married after high school to Victor Cavasin, and had one daughter Sheri (Skrzyniarz). She moved to Sheboygan WI, where she worked at General Box, and suffered an accident there breaking her back. The doctors, said she would be in a wheelchair by time she was 40. She was set to prove those doctors wrong. While in the Iron County area she trained at Crystal Manor to be a CNA, following that she worked for the Crystal Falls Hospital, and next the Iron County Medical Care Facility. Her passion though was working for the Iron River hospital taking care of people, helping them heal and return to their families. She moved on to even become an EMT for Iron County and remained there for many years. Shirley was known wherever she worked for whistling down the halls, and cheering people up. Shirley was also bartender in between jobs at various bars, and continued to cheer people up in all that she did. Her hobbies included playing the accordion, sports, fishing and giving all she had to others. Shirley played softball and fast pitch most of her life. She was very instrumental in the formation of the; Women’s Softball League where she was awarded the Player of the year as well as Grandma of Softball award when she was 48 years old. Which definitely proved a broken back wouldn’t keep her down. She taught many the skills of fast pitch and softball, and she could out pitch most. She even was nominated to the UP Sports Hall of Fame. Shirley would give you her shirt off her back and was loved by many. Shirley had a long and good quality of life. She had no regrets and was happy with the life she lived. She is preceded in death by her parents, Eino and Myrtle Maki, her sister Susie, her brothers, Pete, Tommy and Wally, her nephew, Bobby and niece Susie, her son in law, Chris Skrzyniarz and her special friend Kathryn (Pudge) Harder. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sheri Skrzyniarz (Greg Hall), grandson, Skylar Skrzyniarz (Claire), granddaughter, Rhya Skrzyniarz, her brother Ron (Sandy) Maki and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She leaves special friends, Anita Phillips (Krunch), Kay and Charles, plus many other special loved friends. A Memorial Service will be held at Ravens Nest December 30th, at 4 pm. The family would like to thank everyone on the Aspirus Ambulance and the nurses and doctors at Aspirus, Iron River. Shirley said they all were very good to her and She actually trained many of them. Shirley will be missed by many people. Rest in Peace Mom, I love you! Memorials may be made in her memory.
